Assessment and rehabilitation support for workplace injuries, with care focused on movement, function, and work-related goals.
Protouch can assist WSIB patients with assessment, treatment, and required documentation. Treatment authorization and coverage depend on the individual WSIB claim, so we discuss your circumstances before recommending next steps.
What WSIB rehabilitation is
WSIB rehabilitation is a functional approach to care after a workplace injury. The focus is on understanding how the injury affects movement and daily or job-related activities, then using appropriate education, exercise, and treatment to support your goals. Your physiotherapist will adapt recommendations to your presentation and reassess as needed.
Progressive exercise and functional rehabilitation
When appropriate, rehabilitation may progress from comfortable movement and basic capacity-building to exercises that reflect your daily activities or work demands. We consider symptom response, strength, mobility, coordination, and tolerance for activity rather than applying a one-size-fits-all program.
Job-specific rehabilitation
Work tasks can place different demands on the body. Where appropriate, assessment and exercise may consider lifting, carrying, reaching, walking, standing, sitting, driving, or repetitive movements relevant to your role. Recommendations are based on your abilities and should be discussed with the appropriate healthcare and claim contacts.
Gradual return-to-work planning
If returning to work is part of your goals, the plan may consider modified duties, task tolerance, restrictions, pacing, and progression. A gradual return-to-work plan is individualized and may be adjusted as your function changes. It does not replace communication with your employer, healthcare providers, or WSIB.
Workplace injuries that may be treated
An assessment helps determine whether physiotherapy is appropriate for your presentation. Examples may include:
- Back and neck strains related to lifting, reaching, or sustained postures
- Shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand injuries, including repetitive strain
- Knee, ankle, and foot injuries after slips, trips, or falls
- Sprains, strains, and other soft-tissue injuries
- Reduced strength, mobility, or tolerance for work tasks after an injury
- Post-surgical rehabilitation related to a workplace injury
When treatment may not be appropriate
Physiotherapy may not be the right first step when symptoms require urgent medical assessment, diagnostic investigation, or care outside the clinic's scope. Seek urgent medical help for serious or rapidly worsening symptoms, new significant weakness or loss of sensation, chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or other emergency concerns. Your physiotherapist will recommend appropriate next steps when a different assessment or referral is needed.
What to expect during assessment
Review your history
Your physiotherapist discusses the injury, current symptoms, relevant health history, job demands, and your goals.
Assess movement and function
The assessment may include observation of movement, strength, mobility, balance, and task-related limitations as appropriate.
Discuss next steps
You receive an explanation of the findings, possible treatment options, and recommendations for communicating with the appropriate claim contacts.
Book an assessment
We can review your concerns and explain how assessment, treatment, and documentation may fit your circumstances. Authorization and coverage remain dependent on the individual WSIB claim.
